Each volunteering subject was offered three choices concerning family member contacts. 112 (18%) probands provided Type I consents which allowed investigators to contact their family members. Seventy-three percent of these individuals were male, 66% were African-American, 30% European-American and 3% of other ethnicities. 312 (51%) probands gave Type II consents, stating that they would contact their family members. Seventy-two percent were male, 74% were African-American, 23% European-American and 3% of other ethnicities. 189 (31%) refused family member contacts.
