Review of comodulogram significance matrix revealed clusters qualifying for further investigation in both men and women (Fig. 1A). The initial set of candidate clusters (17 for women; 17 for men) were distributed across all standard PA domains represented in the comodulograms, though not uniformly so (Fig. 1A, green lines indicate standard PA domain boundaries). Among women, apart from the large candidate clusters in alpha-gamma domain, most candidate clusters were concentrated in PA domains encompassing delta/low theta (0.1–5 Hz) phase frequency bands paired with alpha/low beta (8–15 Hz) or high beta/gamma (20–50 Hz) amplitude frequency bands, most conspicuously within delta-alpha, theta-alpha, and delta-gamma domains (Fig. 1A). Like women, apart from large candidate clusters in alpha-gamma, over half of the candidates identified in men were found in PA domains encompassing delta/low theta (0.1–5 Hz) phase frequency bands including large candidate clusters in the theta-gamma domain, with the rest appearing in alpha-beta and neighboring theta-beta domains.
