The total score of the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenics (CDSS; Addington et al., 1990) was used to measure the depression severity in SCZ sample, independently from confounding factor as the positive and negative symptoms of SCZ and any drug effects. The premorbid Intelligence Quotient (IQ) was investigated, in the HV and SCZ, through a reading task, the Test di Intelligenza Breve (TIB; Sartori et al., 1997), an Italian adaptation of the National Adult Reading Test (NART; Nelson, 1982). The Cognition Rating Scale (SCoRS; Keefe et al., 2006; Vita et al., 2013) was used, in the HV and SCZ, as a screening measure of cognitive function. The severity of functional disability was assessed in SCZ with the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS; American Psychiatric Association, 2000). All subjects enrolled in the study were right-handed on the basis of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (Oldfield, 1971). All participants provided written informed consent.
