Therefore, it would be beneficial to monitor and assess behavioural patterns in order to identify individuals with a greater likelihood of misusing prescription opioids. Fortunately, several tools are currently available to assess such risks, including the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID), and the Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM) [49]. A high rating according to the ORT was strongly correlated with an increase in the risk of future substance abuse, whereas a high score on the COMM only weakly predicted future aberrant drug-use behaviours [49, 50]. Some of the behaviours that indicate an increased risk of substance dependence include taking prescription painkillers more frequently, using such medications to assist with sleep, hoarding unused medication, and requesting frequent refills on painkiller prescriptions [50].
