Chunk #5 — Changes in Frontal EEG Coherence across Infancy Predict Cognitive Abilities at Age 3: The Mediating Role of Attentional Control — The Role of Attentional Control in the Development of Higher-Level Cognition
A core tenet of the developmental psychopathology framework is that development is cumulative, such that the acquisition of new skills is constrained by existing capacities (Masten & Cicchetti, 2010). Cognitive flexibility, receptive vocabulary, and behavioral IC skills develop rapidly across the third year, and each relies heavily on the control of attention. In this way, attentional control may be considered a foundation from which higher cognitive skills are built.
