Research suggests that when social factors, such as access to health services, are equalized, some racial disparities dissipate. In one study, researchers found that poor whites living in the racially integrated, low-income neighborhood of Southwest Baltimore had similar health risks as their black counterparts. The researchers found that nationally reported racial disparities in hypertension, diabetes, and obesity among women were either reduced or nondetectable among the Baltimore cohort.11
