Segments with notably high or low levels of variation do exist. For example, one region on chromosome 8p (GRC 38 positions 1,000,001–7,000,000 bp) has the highest overall levels of variation (Extended Data Fig. 2). This is consistent with previous findings, as this region has been shown to have one of the highest mutation rates across the human genome23.
