Cis-eQTL regulating cytokine release could be envisaged to affect expression of cytokine-modulated genes in the inflammatory cascade resulting in dose response–invoked eQTL in trans over time. An example of such temporal effects involves IFNB1, encoding the cytokine IFN-β, which exhibits a temporal relationship between genetic modulators and gene networks (Fig. 3). After 2-hour LPS (Fig. 3A), we observe a local cis-eQTL for IFNB1 at rs2275888; the same SNP associated in trans after 24-hour LPS with IRF9, IFI6, EPSTI1, LY6E, and MX1 expression.
