Data are presented as mean ± s.e.m. unless otherwise indicated. Distribution of the raw data was tested for normality of distribution; statistical analyses were performed using the Student’s t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, χ2-test, or ANOVA with posthoc tests as indicated. Sample sizes were estimated empirically or based on power calculations. Blinding was used for all analyses comparing patients and control samples.
