For future iPSC studies in AUD, mixed cultures of excitatory and inhibitory neurons co‐cultured with human astrocytes can mimic connectivity patterns of the adult brain. 85 Three‐dimensional brain organoids provide another platform for studying human neurons with physiological connections. 86 , 87 , 88 For example, organoids have been used to examine the effects of ethanol on neuronal development. 89 , 90 , 91 The use of genetically encoded indicators (GEIs) for population‐based studies provides a complementary approach for high‐throughput evaluation of activity. 92 Lastly, advanced proteomic approaches can be used to characterize iPSC‐derived neurons in AUD, as has been done with Rett's disease 93 and schizophrenia. 94
