Text

the focus of research goals has shifted away from scientific discovery first and foremost to that which can be learnt about the individual community to improve health and quality of life. To this end, an increasing number of tribes now have their own Institutional Review Boards. CBPR may range from research question origination by the community to entirely external investigator-controlled research however, most studies fall somewhere in between. The ultimate goal is of an equal academia – tribal partnership in the research and the dissemination of results to federal, community and academic constituencies.68 However, the challenges of trust, informed consent, data ownership and sovereign rights should not be underestimated and misunderstandings on both sides can derail the research process.68
