More generally, childhood sexual abuse has been demonstrated to increase the risk of substance use disorders and early onset drug user over and above the risk conferred by genetic and familial factors (Nelson, et al., 2006). Some evidence suggests that women may be more at risk of increased severity of substance abuse following childhood emotional neglect than males (Hyman, et al., 2006).
