cortico-subcortical control would be further compounded by the insensitivity of adolescence to the motor and sedative effects of alcohol that otherwise may help to limit intake, and the positive influences of alcohol in social facilitation which may further encourage alcohol use 104. As shown by Steinberg and colleagues 23, 41, most risky behaviors- including alcohol and substance abuse- occur in social situations. Thus use of alcohol and drugs may be encouraged and maintained by peers when this behavior is valued.
