Finally, it is possible that the five-item scale of religiosity used in this study is only a proxy for a more robust values construct such as “Conformity to Social Norms”. The development of alcohol abuse or dependence symptoms in this largely under-21 population requires a willingness to flout legal restrictions on alcohol use for minors, which could be moderated by a willingness to adhere to community expectations for adolescents.
