Potential participants did not readily open their doors to field recruiters. To overcome this obstacle, we sent “lead letters” ahead of interviewers to introduce the study to neighborhood households. We also matched field interviewers’ races with the likely racial composition of the neighborhood as a way to decrease suspicion and increase trust. In spite of this multifaceted approach, there were still certain individual barriers that could not be reconciled.
