The 26 focus group participants ranged in age from 22 to 65 years, with a median age of 42. The average household income range was $20,000 to $29,000, with 69% of the sample reporting annual household incomes of under $30,000. Eight of the participants were non-Hispanic White (four males and four females); 18 of them were non-Hispanic Black (four females, fourteen males). Participants’ level of education ranged from eighth grade to post-bachelor’s graduate-level work, with 15 individuals having at least some college education or higher, and 2 individuals having less than a 12th grade education. Most of the participants were single/never married (n = 19).
