With respect to the demographic characteristics associated with both self-harm and suicide attempt, it is clear that girls are at the highest risk, as are those youth who engage in or are exposed to other high-risk behaviors and past victimization. This is not surprising given previous research that show that being female, low socio-economic status, behavior problems, somatic problems, eating disorders, thought problems, delinquent behavior, substance use, and aggressive behavior are associated with adolescent’s suicide ideation or self-harm behavior.
