Substance use in early adulthood was assessed at two time points, ages 22 and 23 (on average). At each assessment point, two primary scores were created in evaluating early-adulthood problematic substance use, including measures of both frequency of use and symptoms of abuse/dependence for each substance evaluated. At the two assessment points, participants indicated the frequency of their use of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana on 8-point scales ranging from never to 2–3 times a day or more for each substance.
