With the notable exception of autism with intellectual disability, however, rare mutations account for a relatively small proportion of cases in psychiatry, although this varies among disorders and their exact contribution is debated. Where they have been found, there is evidence that they converge on the same biological pathways as common variants: genes in schizophrenia GWAS associated regions overlap with those identified by sequencing studies focussed on de-novo damaging mutations in intellectual disability and autism101112.
