Self-report data on the age of onset of any lifetime use for these substances was used to determine whether other substance use preceded the onset of alcohol use, which was coded as a dichotomous variable indicating those with substance use that preceded alcohol use. Note that marijuana (THC) and all other illicit drugs were separate categories.
