Thus, dopamine signaling in several brain regions including the nucleus accumbens, dorsal striatum, ventral pallidum, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, and orbitofrontal cortex modulate the motivation to pursue abused substances (Salamone, et al., 2007).
