Zuo et al., 2012 performed an analysis on samples from two previous studies, SAGE and COGA (Bierut et al., 2010; Edenberg et al., 2010; Zuo et al., 2012). The combined European American sample consisted of 1409 DSM-IV alcohol dependent cases and 1518 non-dependent control subjects which were used as the discovery sample in the GWAS. The combined African American sample consisted of 681 DSM-IV alcohol dependent cases and 608 non-dependent control subjects which was used for replication. The authors reported several SNPs meeting a p < 10–7 including 5 in SERINC2, and 1 in HTR1A. Functional hypotheses relevant to the addiction cycle could be generated for SNPs within or near SERINC2 and HTR1A and are described below.
