UniProt and dictyBase, the model organism database (MOD) for Dictyostelium discoideum, have established a collaboration to improve data sharing. This collaboration, started in 2008, took a major step forward with a jointly organized annotation marathon. The 1-week marathon led to the annotation into UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot of more than 1000 D. discoideum proteins, plus the updating of a large number of gene symbols, protein names and gene models (15). This collaboration continues in a new annotation program that was established at the end of 2008. The program’s main priority is to annotate D. discoideum proteins that have been characterized or whose gene models have been manually verified by dictyBase. It will also include work on gene symbols, protein names and gene model updates.
