The diversity of neuronal GIRK channels is enhanced by alternative splicing which, in the case of GIRK2, yields at least 3 distinct proteins22, 25–30. Two GIRK2 variants (termed GIRK2a and GIRK2c) are particularly intriguing as they differ only by 11 amino acids in their intracellular C-terminal domains. GIRK2c is the longer of the 2 variants, and the 11 amino acid extension contains a conspicuous Class I PDZ interaction domain22, 31.
