how old they were when they first got drunk, defined as having slurred speech or being unsteady on one's feet. Questions related to symptoms of alcohol dependence were included, as adapted from the Semi-Structured Assessment of the Genetics of Alcoholism (Bucholz et al., 1994). Response options for these questions were “Never,” “1–2 times,” “three or more times,” or “don't know.” An alcohol problem score was created by summing the number of symptoms for which a participant endorsed “three or more times.”
