These results are complementary to observations that disease-associated SNPs show eQTL enrichment.6 Additionally, OMIM shows similar heritability enrichment, even though NHGRI GWAS and OMIM only partly overlapped (of genes in either list, 10% are in both). The OMIM genes with significant heritability are also quite diverse, further supporting potential relevance of peripheral blood to other tissues and developmental processes (Supplementary Table 5). Moreover, the evolutionary associations are consistent with the observation that heritability is necessary for responsiveness to selection.45
