a pattern will not be observed when the variance is 1, and even less so with a variance of 0.767: more individuals will then show patterns like 101 and 011, etc. Again, attenuation occurs when the number of items is limited, but the effect is much less pronounced, and again the attenuation is proportional across the different correlations. In this situation, an analysis of sum scores will yield reasonable estimates for the variance components given a sufficient number of items.
