In the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, those who used alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine were more likely to commit violent and non-violent crimes compared to those who used alcohol and cannabis only or alcohol only (Harrison and Gfroerer, 1992). Even if a drug user does not personally commit a crime, he or she likely associates with people who do (i.e., drug dealers), which puts them at an increased risk of experiencing violence and victimization.
