Increasing the diversity of grant reviewers may be one solution. Underrepresented minorities made up 10.9% of NIH study reviewers in 2013, up only marginally from 10% in 2000.3 “Unintentional biases don’t operate as much in diverse groups,” says Dovidio. He points to research on jury deliberations that suggests having more diversity in a group of decision makers can result in more thoughtful and better-informed decisions.41
