they are much more likely to tag causal variants of similar frequency and highly unlikely to represent synthetic associations with single or multiple rare causal variants. Thus, we conclude that synthetic associations created by rare variants are unlikely to explain the majority of GWAS results. That is, because multiple rare variants can create synthetic associations (as nicely shown by Dickson et al.), it doesn't follow that observed associations with common SNPs are caused by multiple rare variants.
