At age 23, participants who were in a romantic relationship of 4 months or longer were interviewed about their experiences in that relationship. This relationship length cutoff was used to increase the likelihood that participants had a range of experiences relevant to the types of examples they would be asked to provide during the interview. Participants responded to questions about times when they felt especially close to their partner, whether they could completely be themselves and share anything with their partner, how the couple resolved conflicts, and how committed the relationship was.
