Thus, it is possible that the absence of a telescoping effect may be reflective of the restriction of our analyses to a younger sample (age < 45 years old). However, as discussed earlier, restricting our sample to younger participants was important to decrease both the potential for recall bias and differential alcohol-related mortality (Keyes et al., 2010; Wagner and Anthony, 2007).
