Controls older than 25 years were preferentially selected, to increase the probability that they were beyond the peak age of risk for developing alcohol dependence. A subset of the COGA participants were assessed on multiple occasions; if a subject was assessed more than once, only one whose diagnosis or lack thereof was consistent across time was selected.
