Text

when smoking the same number of cigarettes per day, it is unlikely that further statistical tests will be able to dissect whether this genetic association with smoking-related diseases is acting only through smoking genetic risk or whether there remains an added direct genetic disease risk. To untangle the genetic relationship of smoking to lung cancer and COPD, animal studies will need to be undertaken which can directly test this lung cancer and COPD risk independent from smoking behaviors.
