The mechanism underlying the induction of EC synthesis was also investigated and was found to require mGluR5 receptors and activation of intracellular phospholipase C. Taken together, the results of these studies suggest that the endocannabinoid system is an important regulator of PFC neuronal activity and support results from behavioral studies showing impairments in working memory following use of cannabis (Riedel and Davies, 2005).
