Figures on alcohol consumption during pregnancy were higher than those from surveys from the USA (46) and Sweden (34) showing that 12 and 30% of women reported consuming alcohol during gestation. Here the figure was 55%, of which only 14% reported drinking more than one drink weekly. Limited data are available on the prevalence of prenatal binge drinking, but a recent French study reported 14% of women consuming five or more drinks on one occasion during pregnancy (47), which is similar to our figure of 17% for consuming four or more drinks, whereas a US study found only 2% of pregnant women binge drinking (46).
