decreased expression with alcohol and restoration with zinc supplementation. Indeed, dietary zinc supplementation in alcohol-fed rats decreased oxidative stress and restored redox balance in the lungs. Taken together, these findings highlight the role of dietary zinc in mitigating the effects of alcohol-induced oxidative stress. Clinically, zinc supplementation may prove to be a relatively simple means of restoring redox balance in the airways of individuals with alcohol use disorders, many of whom are in treatment for their addiction but nevertheless are at increased risk for pneumonia and acute lung injury.
