More recently, several other studies provided independent evidence that the CHRNA5, CHRNA3, and CHRNB4 locus is associated with heavy smoking and nicotine dependence [Berrettini et al., [2008]; Bierut et al., [2008]; Thorgeirsson et al., [2008]]. Interestingly, the associations of these genes with other substance abuse/dependence [Grucza et al., [2008]; Wang et al., [2008]] and with lung cancer [Amos et al., [2008]; Hung et al., [2008]; Thorgeirsson et al., [2008]] were also reported.
