Contrast families were recruited through community canvassing in the neighborhoods in which COA families resided and were matched to COA families on the basis of age and sex of the target child and parallelism of community characteristics; both parents of controls had to be free of lifetime alcohol and drug disorders. Assessment waves involving both parents and the child(ren) were at three-year intervals.
