A study by Mash and colleagues also found cocaine-induced expression changes in genes involved in regulating extracellular matrix integrity and angiogenesis (Mash et al., 2007). At the top of the list of affected genes was RECK, encoding a membrane-anchored glycoprotein serving as an inhibitor for matrix metalloproteinase-9. In addition, they also observed altered expression of genes involved in apoptosis and cell death, neurogenesis and axon guidance, signal transduction, transcriptional and translational regulation, and ion transport (Mash et al., 2007).
