In addition to its roles in hematopoietic development, recent evidence suggests that PU.1-bound sites in macrophages play a role in shaping the transcriptional response to inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), likely by generating cell type-specific regions of open chromatin that serve as beacons for the recruitment of transcriptional coactivators in response to stimuli (Ghisletti et al., 2010).
