Alcoholism is a complex trait influenced by both genetic and nongenetic factors. Previous linkage studies have identified several chromosomal regions harboring potential genes for alcoholism [1], although only a few have been replicated. Maximizing information in linkage studies will be crucial for the detection and replication of linkage signals.
