Millennials are the children of baby boomers and generation X are the children of the silent generation and the oldest baby boomers. Baby boomers are the largest generation, followed by millennials, generation X, and the silent generation (Pew Research Center, 2015). Generation X is the smallest generation likely because the birth control pill went on the market in 1964, spurring a reduction in birth rates that separated their cohort from baby boomers. Broadly speaking, each subsequent generation has been more racially/ethnically diverse, more educated, less religious, less likely to marry, and less politically conservative (Pew Research Center, 2015, 2018a).
