In both AA and EA subsamples, women comprised just under half of the subjects, mean age was about 40, approximately one-third of subjects completed fewer than 12 years of education, half reported their annual household income as below $10,000, and just over 50% were never married. Rates of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders in particular, were high in both subsamples (as expected given the study’s ascertainment strategy). Overall severity of psychopathology was somewhat greater in the EA subsample than the AA subsample.
