Findings show that such programs improve parenting behaviors and decrease parental substance use, which in turn may help to decrease delinquent behavior in children. The results from the current investigation provide support for incorporating treatments that focus on the marital and parental dyad into interventions for alcoholism. By improving parental functioning either directly or through decreased alcohol use and improved marital quality, the potential risk for negative child outcomes resulting from decreases in warmth and sensitivity, such as externalizing problems, may be lowered.
