An implicit goal of ENIGMA is to see whether genetic variants impact the brain in a way that affects disease risk. In fact, a number of imaging genetics papers have identified genetic variants that appear to affect the brain and behavior; Hall et al. (2006) and McIntosh et al. (2008) reported a variant in the neuregulin 1 gene that was associated with abnormal cortical function, altered white matter integrity, and with psychosis, and there are many other examples of variants with wide-ranging effects.
