for suicidal behavior. A second surprising finding was that a positive history of maternal mental health problems was associated with lower rates of multiple attempts among adolescents at baseline. The association between maternal mental health problems and adolescent multiple attempts was, however, in the expected direction in longitudinal analyses. Further, paternal mental health problems were associated with higher rates of multiple attempts in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. We do not have an explanation for the discrepant maternal findings.
