that compared to European American college students, African American students were less likely to drink heavily because they felt that they would be criticized for drinking more than four or more drinks in a row by their non-European American university peers. African Americans are also significantly less likely to endorse permissive attitudes about drinking, and are more likely to believe “there is nothing good about drinking” and that “drinking is not one of the pleasures of life” (Caetano & Clark, 1999; Herd, 1997a).
