However, it should be noted that it can also be unclear what the “correct” diagnosis is for so-called mixed presentations that do not neatly fall into a single disorder class. In addition, longitudinal studies using standardized assessment batteries indicate changing diagnoses over time within an individual (e.g., Caspi et al., 2020). Given genotypes that do not change over time, with respect to genomics efforts it would be ideal to capture the transdiagnostic traits that predict risk across these changing diagnoses. Mixed-presentations and changing diagnoses may both be addressed by utilizing more fine-grained phenotypes (e.g., shared symptoms or risk factors) that transcend diagnostic boundaries, a topic returned to in the future directions section.
