Co-manipulation also significantly increased pAKT and pS6 levels in newborn neurons more than either manipulation alone (Figures 2C to 2D and Table S1). Thus, there is a synergistic interaction between DISC1 and GABA signaling in regulating AKT/mTOR signaling and dendritic growth of newborn neurons in the adult brain. Other aspects of new neuron development appeared to be normal (Figures S2A to S2C), supporting the specificity of the synergistic interaction.
